Journal - 4/29/13

Journal - Who is the oldest family member of your family you have ever met? What do you know about your family history? Have your parents ever told you anything thing about your family history?  Do you know what kind of heritage you have? Explain as much as you can about your family and any history you have knowledge of.

The oldest family member I have ever met is most definitely my grandmother, Virginia Paulsen. Before her death, she was at least 98 years old, but suffered from dementia in the last ten years of her life. Her mentality slowly withered away until she couldn't even remember how to eat. The majority of my family hails from Mennonites. My grandfather, Delbert Fast, migrated to the city life because he didn't find the regular Mennonite lifestyle (which didn't consist of any recreational technologies, such as television or radio). He moved to Kansas, where he got a job as a busboy in a diner and started dating the proprietor's daughter, Mary Jane Koehn, who eventually became his wife. The Koehns also heiled from Mennonite heritage, but were not as devout as the Fasts. Delbert and Jane had two sons, Scott and Jason, the former which is my father. Scott married Lori Paulsen in 1991, and they had me in 1995. My sister, Madysen, was born in 1998. Lori was the youngest daughter of Wayne and Julie Paulsen, who in contrast to my other grandparents were natural born city folk. Aside from my mom, they had another daughter named Lisa. It's safe to say she and my mom don't get along. At all.

Journal - 4/22/13

Journal - Which web design platform did you choose - Wix or Weebly? What are three things you've learned about Web Design so far?

I picked Wix for by web design platform. There is very little I've learned that I didn't already know, but a few things I didn't know are as followed. I learned how to change the opacity and reception of some pictures or texts that don't always come out so perfectly. I learned how to actually integrate the page onto other websites, such as links. I also learned how to make a website. Oh, really? Isn't that what this whole thing was about. Ha, kidding. So that's it I guess.

Journal - 4/18/13

Journal - What have you learned about making a website? Explain.

I've learned only a few things I didn't realize before. One of them is that people can be really judgmental towards some websites (ex. Justine). Also, it takes a lot of work and planning to actually figure out what to actually put on the website, such as background information, data, and anything that would actually be able to warrant someone's attention towards the site.

Journal - 4/16/13

Journal - What do you know about building and creating a website? Have you ever done it before?  List qualities of a well designed and well functioning website.
I've never created a website, in all the time I've used the internet. But, I'm guessing it is probably time consuming, and a slow process with all of the updating and new features that are added over time. I'm not to sure on good qualities of a website, but a few I can guess at would be viable sources, materials, and bandwagon appeal.

Top 3 Stop-motion shorts

Top 3 Stop-motion videos

  1. How to Draw Black by Jared Demmel - This video definetely must have taken a lot of effort and time to finish. The photos taken were always focused on the exact spot, so it did not look as though the camera was being wobbled around like in most videos.
  2. Rubix Cube by Maggie Connors - This video was simple and didn't require any real effort. Which is commendable, so I can't help but like it a lot more than most.
  3. Driving by Will Munholland - This video was by far the longest. I can't imagine how long it must have taken to drive and park the car so many times. Again, the effort and time taken is what makes it good.

Journal - 4/11/13

Journal - Tell me about two things you've learned while creating your stop-motion animation video. Go in to detail about those two items.

One thing I learned is that you need to remember to move your hand out of the shot, because even one mistake like that can jeaporadize the video. I had to retake a single photo just to fix that mistake. Another thing I learned is that I probably should have thought of what kind fo music to put into the video. All that time I spent working on the video, I never even considered the music. There's always gotta be something...

Journey - 4/8/13

Journal - What step are you currently on in your stop-motion animation video? Tomorrow you need to have all your pictures on your computer when the bell rings. Will you be ready? If not, why? What do you plan on getting done in class today. Make a 'To-Do' List on your blog.

I have taken most of the photos, but right now I am working to actually put them in the necessary order. As you can imagine, it takes a while to get all of the photos ready for a stop motion video. It appears short when it plays, but it takes an hour or more to actually create it. Hopefully, it will be ready to upload by tomorrow.

Journal - 4/5/13

Journal - What are you planning on doing for your stop-motion animation video? What story are you going to tell? How will your video be fun and different? Who is taking your photos? When are you taking your photos?

That remains to be seen. I don't plan on having any real people present in the video, and I'm not looking at making it to terribly long. The photos are being taken mainly by me, with a little assistance from some family members. The photos have been done in my house, my backyard, and a small park some distance from my home.

Journal - 4/4/13

Journal - What do you know about Stop-Motion Animation? Have you ever heard of it before? If you haven't, what do you think it is? Explain.
I know that it is very time consuming. Even if the presentation is to be a mere five minutes long, the process can take up to an hour or more the complete. Of course I've heard of it. This day in age I don't really think there are many people who haven't. I haven't seen many examples nowadays, but I do know that it was used multiple times back in the 90s. The biggest example I know are the Wallace & Gromit films, which I watched when I was a kid. The process was also used for classical films like King Kong and The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms.

Journal - 4/1/13

Journal - What kind of story is your 5 Frame Storyboard going to tell? Did you take photos over the weekend? How is your project going to be creative and different, not just normal and plain? Explain.

First off, Happy April Fool's Day (not really). Anyway, the 5 Frame Storyboard will depict something that I don't really feel like explaining as of this point. But I will say that according to some people that have already listened in on the idea, it's considered 'wonderfully weird.' I took as many photos as I could over the weekend, which honestly wasn't that many so I still need a little work. And how is my project going to be creative and different, not just normal and plain, you ask? Well I'm plan on making the situation in the story simple, but also strange and unnatural as well. I hope all that was understandable. Thank you.

Journal - 3/29/13

Journal - What are some one time only expenses that a business may have when first getting started? How would a business pay for these expenses? Explain.

Wait. Wrong class. Sorry.

REAL Journal - What tool did you use for editing your five photos? Why did you choose that tool? What are some things you learned about that tool while using it?

For my photos, I used Photoshop, because out of all the tools provided, that was the only one that I really had any experience in. I could have picked any others, but by instinct I just clicked on Photoshop. After that I didn't even bother to check on the others. I just picked one and stuck with it. Simple as that.

Journal - 3/28/13

Journal - What are the pros and cons to photo editing? What are some examples of when photo editing is fun and appropriate? When can photo editing be inappropriate or too much?

Photo editing can be beneficial to things like news or reports. But it can also be dangerous, as people can take photos and contort them into innaproporate images that could ruin someone's life.

Journal - 3/26/13

Journal - Do you enjoy photographs? What do you like about them? Do you enjoy taking pictures? When and where do you use pictures?

I guess I don't hate photographs. Depending on what they are photographs of then I suppose they would be enjoyable. Photography isn't exactly a hobby I'd prefer. But, whenever I do things like word or school related projects, I usually borrow pictures from online and use them as examples of the topic that the project goes over. If I were vacationing someplace cool like Japan or Europe, sure I'd take a few pictures.

  1. Not having to get up so early.
  2. Spending a week in Colorado.
  3. Driving to Chicago and back in only a day.

  5. It's Spring Break. The whole thing is basically a highlight.

Journal - 3/8/13

Journal - Happy Friday! Weekend plans? Tell me about them.

Thanks, yes, and no. Just kidding. Tonight, my dad volunteered to serve dinner to the homeless living at the Ronald McDonald House, and I've also volunteered to help out. There aren't really any plans for Saturday. Just everyone lazing around. As for Sunday, there's church in the morning and possibly youth group later in the day. I can except anything else to happen this weekend.

Journal - 3/7/13

Journal - How are you going to try to make your presentation innovative and different than the rest of the presentations in the class? Are you going to organize it differently? Did you find a tool no one knows about? Do you have amazing facts that are going to reel the audience in? Explain.

I really don't know by this point. I haven't really gotten into the project yet, therefor I haven't thought of every detail I plan to include into it. I do plan on organizing it differently than earlier presentations, just so it doesn't seem like a repeat of previous works.

Journal - 3/5/13

Journal - What makes a presentation great? Be specific.

What makes a presentation great is the amount of effort a person really puts into it. They have to really take it seriously and be creative. The information on the subject is an important area, with sources being sighted. Also, when the presentation is actually being presented, the presenter needs to speak out so that the listeners can actually listen. And if that fails, the presentation could use a few attention grabbers that would make it seem more interesting to the audience.

Journal - What is the purpose of an infographic? What are the pros/cons of using infographics?  What type of information is best displayed in an infographic?  How can an infographic help convey your message to an audience?  How can you use infographics in other classes?
The purpose of an infographic is to present complex information quickly and clearly. They utilize graphics to enhance the human visual system’s ability to see patterns and trends. Information in an infographic can range from normal everyday occurances to big time events. They convey a person's attention by using entertaining graphics and visuals that make the topic seem more interesting.

Journal - How productive were you over your snow days? What did you do? Tell me about it.

Honestly, my snow days were not productive at all. from Sunday to Tuesday, I was suffering from a fever that caused me great exhaustion. So, I was bedridden most of the week and didn't really spend much of the break productively. Personally, I found most of the break dull and uneventful. Ironic isn't it.

Journal - Look at http://www.good.is/infographics, http://www.coolinfographics.com/, andhttp://www.infographicsshowcase.com/. What are some qualities of infographics? What do good infographics have in common? Explain.

Infographics are graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge meant to present information more clearly. Their qualities usually include features that attract some people that normally wouldn't be interested in the subject. These features tend to warrant a person's attention, no matter the subject. Many infographics I've seen have also had step-by-step ladder-like instructions that detail the subject. Not all infographics are the same, but the one thing they share is their need to inform readers of their topics.

Journal - 2/12/13

Journal - What are your thoughts and feelings on sharing and collaborating using Google Drive? Easy to use? Hard to use? Fun? Frustrating? Like? Dislike? Can you see yourself using Google Drive in the future? Explain.

My feelings towards Google Drive is mixed. I don't mind sharing some collaborations with others, but if I hardly even know the collaborator, then there's a problem. The whole Google Drive thing isn't hard to use after you've actually learned how to use it. I wouldn't really call it fun, but it's not stupid either. It's alright for business or work purposes, so if I were to use it again in the future, it would probably be for those purposes.

Journal - 2/8/13

Journal - Think of a class assignment or project (from any class) that you have used collaboration. What was it? How did you collaborate? How did you benefit from collaboration either personally or academically?

The last project that I collaborated on was a science related project where the group was required to collect insects and then put them on display as sort of a museum-esque exhibit. The project, in my opinion, required collaboration because there were moments where it would require combined effort to complete. I did benefit from this because through combined minds and ideals, the project looked as though it had been done by a mind higher than that of a high school student's. This wasn't the only collaborated project I've done, but it is a nice example.

Journal - 2/7/13

Journal - How did you choose to breakdown your 5 paragraphs of information for your essay? You need an introduction and a conclusion but what are your middle three paragraphs about? Have you found your outline helpful? Why or why not?
My middle three paragraphs detail the effects that my topic have on the public. They discuss how said topic impacts the people in negative or positive ways. My outline has been helpful because the information I've gathered is told from the perspective of different sources, thereby allowing me to deal with different topics that still relate to the global issue.

Journal - 2/5/13

Journal - What makes a good introduction paragraph to an essay or paper? Hint - review the 6 Trait Writing rubric for help.

If you really want to make a good introduction paragraph, you can't use simple phrases like "For starts", "On the topic of", or "One day", because it seems awfully unprofessional. Also, you shouldn't refer to yourself as I so many times, if not any, as that may direct the reader's attention away from the main subject.

Journal - What is collaboration? What are the pros of collaboration? What are the cons of collaboration? How do you use collaboration in your digital life? When is there a time in your life that you would not want to use collaboration?

Collaberation, in my opinion, is a project or work that includes combined effort from more than a single person.

Journal 2/1/13

Journal - Why is it important to create an outline before writing a paper? What web tool did you choose to start building your outline in? How would you evaluate the tool? Easy to use, difficult, fun, pretty looking, etc.

It's important to create an outline before writing a paper because if you were to go straight to the paper, you are likely to make several typing or grammatical errors. The outline would allow you to look back on your work and check for any mistakes so that the final draft is perfect once you turn it in. The wed tool I decided to use for my outline was Text2MindMap. The reason for this is because, after I checked over all three options, I found that Text2MindMap was simpler to do and required less step-by-step process than the other two options. It is easy to use, and is hardly difficult if you are smart enough to know how to use it. I guess I could also count it as fun, but I'm not about to get all sentimental on the subject.

Journal - Today you will be selecting a global issue topic to use in the next two units for this class. When you hear/read the words “global issue” what comes to mind? Elaborate and explain yourself.

When global issue comes to mind I think of stuff that would place the world, or the people of Earth, in jeopardy. Examples that come to mind are natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, or tsunamis. There are also man-made disasters such as nuclear disasters.

Cyber Bullying - PSA

Journal - 1/24/13

Journal -  Why do you think cyber bullying is such a big issue? Do you think cyber bullying happens in your community and here at Blue Valley High School? Have you ever witnessed cyber bullying? Explain your thoughts and feels about this topic.

Cyber bullying is a big issue because it has a large negative impact on people. For one, it makes people feel horrible and embarrassed, and can lead to depression and maybe even suicide. I myself have never actually seen cyber bullying, and I really hope that I don't. Now just because I have never actually seen it doesn't mean it doesn't happen here at school. From what I've heard, cyber bullying is everywhere, and if it was taking place her at Blue Valley I would be surprised because the people at this school always seemed better than that. I mean people are always going on about how great this school is, and the students here always seemed so nice to one another. If cyber bullying was happening here at our school, my faith in the people here would decrease significantly.

  1. The ability to speak out in front of others.

  4. Speaking loudly and clearly.
  5. Don't stutter.

Journal - What do you know about Public Service Announcement? What do you think it is and what do you think its purpose is?

I don't know much about public service announcements in general, but judging by the name I'm assuming that it has something to do with public information and news. What I'm guessing the purpose is is to inform people of important daily events that could have important effects on their lives. Again, I'm not entirely sure, so I could be wrong.

Journal - 1/15/13

Journal - What 5 websites do you visit most often? Why do you visit them?

I don't really keep track of what websites I normally visit, but one that is definitely frequent is YouTube. Now I speak for everyone to say that YouTube is one of the most frequently visited websites on Earth because of viral videos, posted news, etc. It attracts a lot of media attention and is widely recognized, therefor I visit it a lot. Other than that, there aren't really any websites that I can keep track of. Mostly when I'm on the computer I'm either  typing on word or surfing the internet for necessary information.

Journal - What Web 2.0 tool did you choose to use for your Who Am I presentation? Why did you choose this tool? Have you ever used it before?

The Web 2.0 tool I chose was Prezi. I really had no reason behind my decision. I originally clicked on the link just to explore the sight, and it seemed to automatically warrant my attention. Thus, I didn't bother to look at Slideshare and Sliderocket.

Journal - 1/11/13

Journal - What is the importance of online safety and protecting your information? What do you do to protect yourself online? Share an experience you or someone you know has had with online safety.

To protect myself online, I usually program protective firewalls and/or log in codes. If someone were to attempt to bypass the log in and fail more times than necessary, he or she will be booted from the page. Now I didn't come up with these methods on my own. I had assistance from my dad, who has good experience with software, and told me about these types of protection. They have come in handy, but I've never really had to worry about someone trying to hack my information. Not that there was ever anything interesting to see.

Journal - 1/10/12

Journal - Do you use images from the internet? Do you site your images when you use them? Do you think you should be able to take anything from the internet without permission? Explain.

I have used images on the internet many times depending on the circumstances. If I am using the pictures for a school related assignment, I do find it wise to site the image's original location to avoid any form of plagiarism. Now if I am using the images for my own uses, I don't normally cite the locations. Personally, I don't find it necessary to do so at moments like that, because I'm only using the images for personal needs only. If I were using them for something big, now then it would be necessary to site the images.

Journal - What are your hobbies and extra curricular activities? Where do you spend your free time? Tell me three of your favorite things (movies, TV show, magazine, sport, color, etc.)

My hobbies range from using programs on the computer to reading and writing. In my free time, I like to brainstorm different ideas for different stories. I also enjoy surfing the internet to see whats going on in the world. On the subject of my favorite things, I enjoy watching television shows such as NCISThe Big Bang Theory and Seinfeld. My all time favorite movie is The Avengers, and my favorite book is The Lord of the Rings (all three volumes included). On a lesser note, my favorite color is blue, and out of all sports, football is probably my most favorite, but I don't frequently play it.
